. On the painting side my early influences were other artists that worked on the Amiga, and recently Craig Mullins, who's fantastic talent gave me a big jolt and motivated me to get better and learn new things.

Painting on a digital canvas Charles Darby created 10 digital matte paintings for the third Harry Potter movie, including one printed onto six 100ft canvases.. publication: Article first published: Winter 2004 Digital matte painting for Minority Report.. There was no rulebook when I became involved with digital matte painting in the early 90s.. Of course, traditional matte painting has been around almost as long as cinema, but these were hand painted on glass, not Photoshop-created vistas that relied on photorealism for their effect – and which had to contain incredible on-screen detail.. I studied painting for three years in Italy under the artist Charles Cecil and then returned to London to study at Goldsmiths.. I put on an exhibition of my work while I was there – mainly photorealistic oil paintings.. I was approached by an art director who suggested I consider trying my hand at matte painting, so I applied for a job at Cinesite in LA.. Digital matte painting had just been born at that point.

I said "nothing more than paintings" but in reality, the craft of Matte Painting is one of the most challenging and also can be one of the most rewarding when things come together as planned.. Matte painting, it seems, is an obsolete term according to Dylan Cole who insists that it’s more relevant to call it virtual environment art..
