Library of Congress--Historical Collections for the National
Digital Library, Part I
. Others are collections of items in a special original form, such as daguerreotypes or paper prints of early films.. One aspect of the discussion relates to the question of when it is appropriate to generate a digital version that attempts to be a faithful copy of an item and when to take advantage of the potential for enhancing access to the content.. By establishing names for items early, descriptive materials can be prepared independently of the digitization process.. Names can relate digital representations to the corresponding original items during the production process.. In the longer term, the name will have no semantic "meaning" when used to retrieve the corresponding digital item.. Each item has a two-part "logical" name that consists of a collection identifier and an identifier for the item (unique within the collection) .. The logical name can be parsed and used to derive full "physical" path- and filenames for an item following simple rules expressed in a table.
National Digital Library Program -- Informal Model
. Automatic links from indexes or documents to an individual digital item are implemented by use of its unique name.. A name (or rather, in today's implementation, the corresponding URL) can also be used directly by to user to retrieve the item without performing a search.. There may also be item- or group-level catalog records in the main catalog where judged appropriate by curatorial staff, for example, for items in high demand for reproduction.. The model also allows for catalogs at other institutions to point directly to collections or items in the Library's digital archive.. Access tools for individual collections currently include indexes of MARC bibliographic (catalog) records for individual items, indexes to the full text of document reproductions, and registers or finding aids (in the form of browsable documents with direct links to individual items).. For future collections, more use will be made of finding aids (and possibly of group-level cataloging), and correspondingly less of item-level bibliographic records.
Digital Collections and Programs: Library Functions (Library of Congress)
. American Memory now offers more than 7.5 million digital items from more than 100 historical collections.. The catalog provides access through group or item records to about 50 percent of the Division's holdings.

Digital Interlibrary Loan (Interlibrary Loan, Library of Congress)
>> >> >> Digital Interlibrary Loan Find in Go to scanned items: Digital Interlibrary Loan Small items that are too fragile to circulate on interlibrary loan are usually supplied through a photocopy.. This makes public domain items widely accessible for current and future requests and contributes to the preservation of the original.. Items protected by copyright are not scanned in this program.. If you received a message in response to an interlibrary loan request directing you to check this website for a digital copy of the item you requested, please examine the list of scanned titles by clicking on the appropriate link on the right.. Scanned items in this list are linked to PDF files that can be viewed on your web browser, printed, or downloaded.. Should you wish more information about the item, a link to its catalog record is also provided.. A scanned item will be accessible from this page for at least six months from the time it was scanned.
Planning Digital Projects for Historical Collections
. How is the information on the verso of a photograph retained? Is the original or a surrogate (such as microfilm or slides) more appropriate for the capture? How faithful does color representation or detail need to be? Also, bound items will be very difficult to scan if they do not open at least 90 degrees or have texts or images too close to the binding.. Rather than defer digitizing the record of this material until item-level cataloging was possible, an inventory containing existing descriptions and finding aids was created.. Planning a digitization project involves bringing together print and digital items in a coherent way.. A user looking for an item in the library catalog should be able to identify it without regard to whether it is available in its original physical form or as a digital or microfilm reproduction.
ISO - International Organization for Standardization
. The basic architectural concept in MPEG-21 is the Digital Item.. Digital Items are structured digital objects, including a standard representation, identification and metadata.. More concretely, a Digital Item is a combination of resources (such as videos, audio tracks, images, etc), metadata (such as descriptors, identifiers, etc), and structure (describing the relationships between resources).. This second part of MPEG-21 (ISO/IEC 21000-2:2003) specifies a uniform and flexible abstraction and interoperable schema for declaring the structure and makeup of Digital Items.. Digital Items are declared using the Digital Item Declaration Language (DIDL) and declaring a Digital Item involves specifying its resources, metadata and their interrelationships.. Within ISO/IEC 21000-2:2003 this Digital Item Declaration (DID) technology is described in four main sections: Model: The Digital Item Declaration Model describes a set of abstract terms and concepts to form a useful model for defining Digital Items.

Cultural Heritage', Ariadne Issue 34
. This article will show that: The most powerful deciding factor for price was the perceived market value of the item (as defined by what similar organisations are charging) rather than the actual cost of creation and provision.. None of the interviewed institutions were fully recovering the cost of creation, management, storage and service provision solely from the sale of the digital item itself.. No institution was able to quantify accurately the cost of digital preservation and thus consider mechanisms to sustain the service in the sale price of the digital item.. The breakdown of institutions: Type of Institution Surveyed (excluding interviews) Interviewed University Library 16 3 Public Library 6 3 National Library 2 4 Museum and Gallery 7 5 Picture Library 1 0 County Council or Archive 4 0 Survey findings The results from the 51 institutions give some indication of the overall maturity of the market for the sale of analog and digital items in the heritage sector.. Further measures of sophistication of the service level were also made in terms of how the consumer could select the items they wanted and also what the turnaround time offered to the consumer was.

Digital Web Magazine - Web 2.0 for Designers
. For example, designers can mark up content as headers, paragraphs, list items, citations, and definition lists using the <h1> , <p> , <li> , <cite> and <dl> tags, respectively.. An interesting interface built using eBay’s Web services is, a site that tracks sales and prices to give auction sellers a better idea of what items are hot and how much they’ve been selling for.. Thus, much of the navigation that is used to reach a specific item might be far removed from the navigation specifically designed for it.. On Flickr and Del.icio.us, any user can attach tags to digital media items (files, bookmarks, images).. We can then access to see what items others have tagged similarly, and discover valuable content that we may not have known existed.
