Digital Identity shows how an enterprise-wide identity management architecture can provide security while ensuring that interactions with customers, employees, partners and suppliers are richer and more flexible.. Digital Identity explains how to go about it.. This book details an important concept known as "identity management architecture" (IMA): a method to provide ample protection while giving good guys access to vital information and systems.. In today's service-oriented economy, digital identity is everything.. IMA is a coherent, enterprise-wide set of standards, policies, certifications and management activities that enable companies like yours to manage digital identity effectively--not just as a security check, but as a way to extend services and pinpoint the needs of customers.

The problem is that a digital identity infrastructure isn't something you buy from a vendor, any more than you bought your file, print, and desktop infrastructure.. Your digital identity infrastructure is no different.. A bigger problem is that identity management is as much about politics and economics as it is about technology--maybe more.. Identity Management Architectures To succeed, you need a strategy, one that takes into account not only the technology, but the politics and economics surrounding digital identity.. I call such a strategy an identity management architecture , or IMA.. This is the situation in which most enterprises find themselves with their digital identity infrastructure.. In the same way that city planning creates a set of standards and rules for buildings to ensure that the overall area is consistent and workable, an IMA is a collection of policies, rules, and standards that provides the context for creating a flexible digital identity infrastructure.

Jon Udell: The semantic web, digital identity, and Internet governance
. Capturing the identity of individuals, along with personal information about them, has become a habit While Internet Explorer sits on the sidelines, benched by Avalon, the rest of the players are creating some excitement on the field.. [Full story at ] I was reminded of the twin themes of this column -- digital identity and the semantic web -- when Sean McGrath to which states: Whenever a major organization develops a new system as an official standard for X, the primary result is the widespread adoption of some simpler system as a de facto standard for X.. Likewise, having spent more hours than I care to admit poring over specs and architecture diagrams from the Passport, Shibboleth, Liberty, and WS-Federation projects, I suspect (as does ) that some other identity standard will prevail.. Digitial Identity in Cyberspace
and 10 December 1998 A digital identity system must serve several functions.. Finally, establishing a digital identity architecture may have the beneficial side effect of facilitating confidentiality through encryption-the knowledge that no one besides Alice can read a message intended for her.. For our analysis in this paper, a digital identity system must serve the first three functions, and may serve the fourth.. The technical problem with cyberspace in 1998 is that there is no effective, widespread architecture to verify identity on the Internet.. There is no digital identity mechanism that meets the needs for the diverse range of cyberspace interactions.. Some fail because they attempt to apply literal translations of real world identity and do not seek to capture the benefits of making identity digital, such as the unbundling of traits, which will be analyzed below.. Some fail because they mandate very rigid rules and do not allow flexibility around the policy trade-offs involved in any identity verification system.

. June 15, 2006 Posted by Eric Norlin @ 2:51 pm just gave a fascinating talk at Catalyst entitled, "Identity and Community in Human Society." I won't try to summarize *all* of Bob's points, which began with the social construction of reality and walked through the "non-person-ness" of corporations (and subsequently what they value).. Briefly: Individual gives identity data to an "identity provider"; identity provider gives identity data to corporation.. (I'm summarizing this badly, but hang with me.) Rather Bob proposed - "The Identity Oracle" — not in the large software company sense, but in the "entity that aggregates information and relays metadata to a third party" sense.. The equation then is: Individual gives data and policy to the Identity Oracle; Identity Oracle aggregates data of individuals and provides meta-data to corporations.. Did Bob intend to say that Google is an Identity Oracle that's monetizing the value of that interaction? We'll see what Bob says… | Categories: Posted by Eric Norlin @ 9:06 am The morning of day two of began with an early morning meeting of the .

Robin’s titled, “Is ‘user-centricity’ the answer to identity fraud? ” was the impetus for my interview with him because it addressed some issues related to user-centric identity and various types of liability I’ve been thinking about with regard to identity providers (those entities in the user-centric “model” that will issue claims on behalf of the individuals who use their services).. I have a lot of respect for Robin and his thoughts on Identity, so I’m off to listen to this one.. . The Digital Identity Big Bang Coming To You Any Year From Now | POSTED: 05.10.05 @03:00 Are you on the internet? What a question, you say, I’m reading this on-line! Where are you on the internet? We know where Amazon is on the internet (at amazon.com), where on the internet the Fedex package is that you are expecting (at fedex.com, type in the package number), and even where this article is that you are reading right now (just look at your browser’s address bar).. Digital Identity technologies intend to change all of this.. Instead of having multiple personality disorder on-line, these technologies promise to give you a digital identity that is the same everywhere.. Digital Identity technologies go back at least to the 1970’s (see ) and have progressed steadily since.. And a range of innovative new projects have sprung up as well, from over to (disclaimer: I’m one of the inventors of Light-Weight Identity).. So one of these years, and soon, the digital identity mess is going to get sorted out once and for all, at least if you believe the proponents.
