Digital Preservation and Records Management
. Digital Preservation and Records Management Digital Preservation Massive investment is being made in the creation and purchase of digital content and information; they are now central to the work of most educational institutions, and form a significant and growing part of our cultural and intellectual heritage.. Preservation is therefore a more immediate issue for digital than for traditional resources.. Digital resources will not survive or remain accessible by accident: pro-active preservation is needed.. Digital Preservation requires not only the maintenance and disaster recovery procedures needed for securing the media and its contents (often referred to as 'archiving') but also strategies and procedures to maintain its accessibility and authenticity over time.. Preservation of digital resources will be of increasing importance for a wide range of activities and materials within UK FE/HE.. Not all information or content needs to be preserved in perpetuity but digital preservation is needed to maximise the nation's and institutions' investments in digital resources in the medium term, and over the longer term to secure the intellectual and cultural record that increasingly exists only in digital form.

Digital Preservation Needs and Requirements in RLG Member Institutions
. Questions? Digital Preservation Needs and Requirements in RLG Member Institutions By Margaret Hedstrom and Sheon Montgomery December 1998 A study commissioned by the Research Libraries Group This report is available in two versions: The is optimized for printing.. The institutions that have traditionally assumed responsibility for preserving information face technical, organizational, resource, and legal challenges in taking on the preservation of digital holdings.. The primary purpose was to assess where guidance, education and training, storage, and digital preservation services are required, in order to develop the kind of training, mechanisms for resource sharing, and services that meet members' needs.. Only half of the institutions with digital preservation responsibilities have policies that govern acquisition, conversion, storage, refreshing, and/or migration of digital materials.. Most institutions that do refresh or migrate digital materials carry out these activities ad hoc or in conjunction with system upgrades, rather than as an integral part of a digital preservation program.
Emulation as a Digital Preservation Strategy
D-Lib Magazine October 2000 Volume 6 Number 10 ISSN 1082-9873 Emulation as a Digital Preservation Strategy Stewart Granger UK Project Co-ordinator of the CAMiLEON Project University of Leeds Introduction Many libraries and archives are in the process of ‘going digital’.. Yet the fact remains that several key issues concerning the long term preservation of digital technologies remain unsolved.. Moreover, as of today no one knows how to ensure the long-term preservation of multimedia documents nor how to ensure the integrity of documents that may have many links to other documents that may be anywhere in the world.. For a brief overview of some digital preservation issues see and .. Emulation Given the problems just outlined, the dominant approach to digital preservation has been that of migration.. What are the issues with respect to emulation as a digital preservation strategy? I suggest the picture appears as in .. One of the issues for digital preservation is what needs to be preserved in addition to the pure intellectual content of a digital object.
About us: Collection care - Digital Preservation
> > Digital Preservation | The British Library is collecting and creating an increasing amount of material which is used on computers.. The diversity of digital material and frequent changes in computer technology presents various challenges to be tackled; understanding and addressing legal rights and responsibilities for preservation, to the range of technical issues for providing long-term preservation and access.. A pro-active approach is needed with the preservation of digital materials, they will not survive if they are neglected.. The British Library has also produced a based on the as presented at the on the preservation of electronic records.. The Digital Preservation section is involved with research projects and working groups both locally and internationally in collaboration with other institutions and companies.. Preservation in the Digital World
Preservation in the Digital World Paul Conway Head, Preservation Department Yale University Library March 1996 Author's Acknowledgement A sincere thank you to Janet Gertz, Anne Kenney, Jan Merrill-Oldham, Jim Reilly, and Don Waters for carefully reviewing a draft of this report.. My conclusions and recommendations do not necessarily reflect the views of the Commission on Preservation and Access or its staff.. Table of Contents This paper provides an intellectual rationale for maintaining the centrality of preservation concepts and ethics in an increasingly digital information environment.. This includes a framework for preservation planning and management from two perspectives: (1) contexts for action and (2) priorities for action, pointing out similarities and differences between present practice and future needs.. It suggests that many of the basic tenets of preservation management can be applied in a highly technological environment, but that some long-held principles may no longer apply.

Main Articles: 'Excuse Me ... Some Digital Preservation Fallacies?', Ariadne Issue 46
. Some Digital Preservation Fallacies? argues with himself about some of the assumptions behind digital preservation thinking.. The original suggestion was for a follow-up "even more after eLib"; however, I now work for JISC, and that probably makes it hard to be objective! In "After eLib", I wrote this paragraph about digital preservation: "Back to the Electronic Libraries Programme, what were some of my favourite projects (I won't say best; this is definitely a subjective list)? The project of greatest personal satisfaction for me is CEDARS , the digital preservation project.. We still have CEDARS as an exploratory project piloting ideas (which together with its JISC/NSF-funded companion, CAMiLEON has a high international profile) rather than a full-blown digital preservation service; this is another example of the difficulty of taking even widely supported ideas through research into service.. I hope that in this interim period our consciousness of the problem is raised enough that temporary expedients will be found so that little of importance will be lost." I now work for the Digital Curation Centre, which is concerned to help improve support for digital preservation and curation.
Extending metadata for digital preservation
Extending metadata for digital preservation Michael Day suggests how the concept of metadata could be extended to provide information in the specific field of digital preservation.. Metadata does have an acknowledged role in the organisation of and access to networked information, but it could additionally be important in the general area of digital preservation Digital preservation The preservation of digital information can be seen as one of the greatest challenges for the library and information professions at the end of the twentieth-century .. Useful work has been published by the US Commission on Preservation and Access (CPA), including an important report by a Task Force on the Archiving of Digital Information (TFADI) jointly commissioned with the Research Libraries Group .. Libraries have traditionally understood at least one of their roles as the preservation of information for future use.. This implies a commitment, by national libraries at least, to the long-term preservation of digital publications.
The Digital Preservation of e-Prints
. As the name "Open Archives Initiative" implies, online repositories are often referred to as "archives" but this loose use of the term "archive" does not necessarily imply a curation or long-term preservation function.. The question is: should e-print archives perform a truly archival function by preserving their contents for the long term? The question of preservation One way of addressing this question is to consider the arguments of a leading advocate of e-prints, Stevan Harnad.. Harnad's views on digital preservation of e-prints have been expressed in a number of publications and e-mail discussion lists .. If this is the case, Harnad argues, preservation should not be a priority.. Putting an emphasis on preservation may detract from or slow down efforts to fill repositories.. This might be the case if repository managers delay making repositories available until there are watertight preservation policies in place, or if they put additional barriers in the way of authors before they can submit papers (such as insisting on particular file formats or metadata standards).
