Bible contradictions: Rev 16-May-07

The following verses are noted for your information only and are not to be thought of as some kind of attack launched against you by Satan in order to destroy your faith. These observations are simply those verses which I encountered during my personal bible study and research, attempting to arrive at a better understanding of God's word. So before continuing, pray for God's protection and guidance, and the patience needed to increase your personal knowledge and understanding in Bible Study.

Direct quote contradiction:

(at Sauls/Pauls apparition on the road to Damascus)

Acts 9:7 (KJV) And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. (The authors comment)

Acts 22:9 (KJV) And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. (Pauls comment)

(The death of Judas)

Acts 1:18 (KJV) Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

Matthew 27:5 (KJV) And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

(How the field was purchased and got its name)

Matt 27:7-8 (KJV) And they (the priests) took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept. [The verse above (Acts 1:18) states that Judas purchased the field.]

(Who tempted David in this case? Jehovah or Satan.)

1 Chr 21:1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

2 Sam 24:1 And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

Translation contradictions:

Romans 7:7 (KJV) What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

1 Corinthians 14:39 (KJV) Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. (According to the "Strongs Concordance", these are not the same words as in the accepted Greek original transcripts.)

Genesis 27:39 (The KJV Bible) And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth and of the dew of heaven from above; (the Jerusalem bible says," Far from the richness of the earth shall be your dwelling-place."

Mark 8:12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. (Mat 12:39 adds: "but the sign of the prophet Jonas".)

Doctrinal contradiction:

Jesus preaching:

Mark 3:5 (KJV) And when he (Jesus) had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, "stretch forth thine hand." And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

Paul's teaching to the Colossians:

Colossians 3:8 (KJV) But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

Moses teaches:

Deuteronomy 6:13 (KJV) Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

Matthew 5:34 (KJV) But I (Jesus) say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven for it is God's throne:

Hebrews 7:7 (KJV) And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.

Luke 2:28 (KJV) Then took he (Simeon) him (Jesus) up in his arms and blessed God etc

.

Job 1:5 (KJV) After Jobs sons and daughters feasting, Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

The original Hebrew word is "barak" meaning to kneel or bless.

Note: I have not found one bible that uses the original word "blessed". At the same time, I have no problem accepting it. It's not likely that anyone could curse God and get off the hook very easily; not even if the roof fell in on them.

Genesis 22:1 (KJV) And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

James 1:13 (KJV) Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

a

Spiritual contradictions:

Luke 14:26 (KJV) If any man come to me (Jesus), and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

1 John 2:11 (KJV) But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

a

Scientific contradictions:

Ecclesiastes 1:5 (KJV) The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

Eccl 1:9-10 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

Additions:

John 4:2 (KJV)  (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)  Contradicts, John 3:22 (KJV)  After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized. Plus  John 3:26 (KJV)  And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

Other contradictions:

Matthew 5:1 (KJV) And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

Luke 6:17 (KJV) And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; (This could have been at a different time.)

Genesis 11:2 (KJV) And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

The Jerusalem bible reads, "Now as they moved eastwards, they found a plain in the land of Shinar where they settled.

Ecclesiasticus (a book found in Catholic bibles but not necessarily in other bibles)

Sir 12:7 "Give to the good man and do not go to the help of the sinner."

When Christ teaches, Matt 5:41-43 "Love your enemy."

Sir 30:1 A man who loves his son will beat him frequently, so that in after years the son may be his comfort.

Sir30:12 Allow him no independence in childhood, and do not wink at his mistakes. Bend his neck in youth, bruise his ribs while he is a child, or else he will grow stubborn and disobedient and hurt you very deeply.

Note: These verses in Ecclesiasticus are not necessarily contradictions, but they sound a little strange when they are read. It is my personal opinion that this book is more in line with the Holy Spirit than is the book of Ecclesiastes which is a canonical book for the church.

Here is an example showing another type contradiction attributed to the author of the texts in question.

In 1 Chronicles 21:1, Satan incites David to commit the sin of taking a census of Israel. Five hundred years earlier, this same story portrayed Yahweh as the one who incited David to take the census (2 Samuel 24:1). The later story (1 Chronicles) was written after the Hebrews had been exiled in Babylon where they had been exposed to Zoroastrianism. [Therefore, the oldest of the two, 2 Samuel in this case, would reflect the more correct or accepted reading.]

What you are to learn from this is that the printed word is not as reliable as some might think. Different translators and interpreters will see things differently; as when Matthew, Mark, and Luke are obviously written from their own perspectives and their interpretations differ one from the others to varying degrees.

However, these differences are designed to bring strength to the devout. In spite of these printed differences, the Bible is still perfect in its design, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, this obstacle of bible contradictions can be overcome.
