» 03.22.2003 | From Rap to Country, Musicians Record Opposing Views on War
By Teresa Wiltz The Washington Post

In this country, war has always come equipped with a soundtrack: There’s something about the adrenaline kick of battle, the roiling emotions, for and against, that lends itself to the visceral rush of sound. After all, the Revolutionary War was fought to the tune of “Yankee Doodle”; Vietnam had Bob Dylan. So, in this speeded-up age of instant downloads, it’s no surprise that Operation Iraqi Freedom would already have its own melodies. Nor should it come as any surprise that no one’s singing in harmony.

[..]

Music is the ultimate bully pulpit. And if it’s got a good beat and you can dance to it, so much the better. There’s Madonna, who recently shot an antiwar video with graphic war footage. Alanis Morissette is reportedly in the studio, working on a similarly themed song. Joseph “Reverend Run” Simmons, of the veteran hip-hop group Run-DMC, is recording a peace song with a roster of hip-hop all-stars. Yusuf Islam, aka Cat Stevens, came out of semi-retirement to release new versions of “Lady d’Arbanville” (now called “Angel of War”) and “Peace Train,” a world-beat rendition with vague Middle Eastern echoes that reflect his conversion to Islam.

hey sweet all

checking in to see how everyone's doing in this truly self-defining time.

i've spent my days looking to see what it is that i see "out there" (in saddam, bush, corporations, the person i see on the street corner or otherwise) and see where those same qualities that i see these people possessing show up in me (ie things like : being revenge-minded , being unable to peacefully resolve conflict, not feeling connected to my fellow human beings/alone, being reactionary, being undemocratic, being covert, letting my being angry cuz i've felt invisible for so long result in my feeling righteous and hard, feeling like a victim, being "greedy", not being all-for-one-and-one-for-all, etc etc)

i truly believe that whatever i see out there is, on some level, within me...and it's allowed me to understand that we are all one/linked in a way that at times can be difficult for me to see at times such as these.

» 03.15.2003 | Maxim Magazine :: Interview by David Peisner
Six Things You Oughta Know About Alanis Morrissette
Middle-aged men dig her music, she loves hockey, and…aw hell, we’re not going to give them all away.

Alanis Morissette is not who you think she is. After hearing songs like “You Oughta Know,” “Thank U,” and “Hands Clean,” as well as tunes from her new B-sides collection, Feast of Scraps, you could be forgiven for assuming Alanis is an angry, humorless killjoy who despises men and makes music best suited for misunderstood eighth-grade girls. But, as we found out by sitting down and talking with her, she’s not. In fact, she’s actually kind of cool. It’s amazing what people will tell you if you just bother to ask.

She Doesn’t Hate Men
“A lot of times, I’m perceived as this man-hating cunt who’s goal is to emasculate all men, but that’s not the case. When I was younger, I was definitely angry at men—blaming men a lot, pointing fingers, and perceiving myself the victim. But instead of cowering and saying, ‘I’m this poor little victim girl who’s oppressed and abused,’ I’ve taken responsibility for my role in it and realized there’s such a gift in my experiences with men.”

She Needs Her Mouth Washed Out With Soap
“There was a period over the last decade when I peppered every sentence with an expletive. It’s gotten a little better; I quell it a bit when I’m doing interviews because it can be distracting. But in my day-to-day life, my mouth is pretty truck-driver-esque, much to the chagrin of my poor father.”

She’s a Jock
“I love using my body as an instrument rather than an ornament. I did a bunch of triathlons when I was young, and after Jagged Little Pill, I did a few in Los Angeles. I’ve skied ever since I was three, when my parents stuck me on a pair of skis and kind of pushed me down a hill. Then, about five years ago I started snowboarding and never looked back. I also surf. I went a few months ago in Hawaii, and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. And I used to be a huge hockey fan. I’m actually the honorary captain of the Ottawa Senators.”

She Thinks She’s Normal
“I feel extremely normal. I spend a little extra energy trying to convince people of that, but it’s such a fine line between wanting to live a normal life and not being stupid [about doing it]. Sometimes I’ll go places alone and halfway through the night, think, What kind of fucking idiot am I? Why did I come here alone? But the thought of showing up somewhere with a ton of bodyguards doesn’t feel right in my stomach. I mean, I adore the girl-next-door part of me because I have the ability to walk around and not be crazily recognizable. It allows me to feel very connected to people.”

She Knows Her Psychobabble Annoys People
“I’m a psychology junkie. I know it’s a little unusual to have that kind of psychological inquiry in the middle of songs, but the best part of a CD is that you don’t have to listen to it. Maybe what people are upset by is the conflict of narcissism, but narcissism is not self-care. I think self-awareness or self-consciousness or self-whateverness is a really good thing. The world would be a better place if people focused on themselves a little more.”

Some Guys Really Like Her Music
“I know that, since I’m a woman, [the music’s] probably a little bit more relatable to women, but a lot of men connect with it on a human level. In fact, after Supposed [Former Infatuation Junkie] came out, I walked out onstage for the first show in this club and it was all 40-year-old men. I was like, ‘What the fuck happened?’ I think Supposed was a little softer on men, so maybe there was an ‘Oh, wow. She doesn’t want to eat us for dinner’ element to it.

» 03.13.2003 | Media giant could offload music assets
by Dominic Timms

Debt-laden US media giant AOL Time Warner is examining plans to sell its Warner Music division, home to Madonna, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Alanis Morissette and once the biggest music publisher in the world, according to US reports.

Rather than sell Warner as a whole, AOL Time Warner is looking to offload Warner's music publishing, DVD and CD business and record labels as three independent lots.

The US media group is hoping to sell Warner/Chappell - its music publishing division - for $1.5bn (£925,000), its DVD and CD manufacturing business WEA (Warner-Elektra-Atlantic) for $1bn and its recorded music operation - which includes Warner Bros Records and Atlantic Records - for another $1bn, according to reports in the New York Post.

AOL Time Warner is considering the sale in a bid to reduce long term debt. Following the record-breaking merger between AOL and Time Warner in 2001, the new entity promised to grow revenues to $40bn a year. Last year however, the group reported a net loss of $98.7bn dollars, the biggest loss in US corporate history - and more than the gross domestic product of Egypt.

US reports said possible buyers for the Warner units included rival record companies Sony Music, EMI and Bertelsmann's BMG. But BMG is currently thought to be looking at acquiring EMI - fresh from its success at last month's Grammy Awards - and could team with Sony as a possible merger ally.

Warner Music itself was last month reported to be re-examining the possible acquisition of EMI. It tried to acquire the UK record company three years ago, only to be thwarted by EU regulatory authorities concerned by the merger of parent Time Warner with AOL.

However, like Warner Music, virtually all the major record labels are suffering from stagnating sales, blamed in part of the rise of illegal downloading of music tracks from the internet.

Set up by Warner Bros founder Jack Warner in 1958, Warner Music began life with artists such as the Everly Brothers, later buying Frank Sinatra's record label in 1961 and Atlantic Records five years later. It owns more than a million song titles and its back catalogue features tracks by The Eagles, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. Warner Music was unavailable for comment.

» 03.05.2003 | MusicNet to distribute Maverick tracks
By Justin Oppelaar

NEW YORK (Variety) - Maverick Records, the joint venture label between Madonna and Warner Bros., has inked a deal to distribute its tracks through the label-backed digital music service MusicNet.

Under the terms of the nonexclusive pact, MusicNet subscribers will be able to stream or download digitized tracks from Maverick's catalog, which includes music from Alanis Morissette, the Deftones and Michelle Branch.

However, Maverick has not licensed its tracks for use in one of MusicNet's key services -- allowing "permanent" downloads that can be burned onto a CD or uploaded into a portable device. The label declined to comment as to whether it would authorize such functions in the future.

MusicNet recently made a quantum leap forward in its bid to capture a piece of the mainstream music market, as America Online rolled out its version of the service to its 37 million Internet-access customers. Service competes head-to-head with label-supported rival Pressplay, as well as independent digital-music startups such as FullAudio and Listen.com's Rhapsody.

» 02.14.2003 | Alanis finds her funny side
By Dino Scatena

A FUNNY thing happened to Alanis Morissette recently - she decided to become a comedian. Quite literally - this is no joke.
Right now, she's with a bunch of friends in Malibu, editing skits they've filmed over the past few months.
"We randomly shot this comedy stuff and we're just putting together this piece," says Morissette. "I don't even know where it will wind up but the exercise of actually doing it is so fulfilling that I don't even care."
So, exactly when did this supposed former little miss angsty-pants suddenly decide life was all one big punch-line?
"When did I get less precious?," she shoots back. (Boom-boom!) "I'd say about a year and a half ago something changed where I just thought, 'I don't really care how I'm perceived as much.'
"I think for a long time I very much was hell-bent on countering patriarchy and being this warrior woman who countered so many things, that it was my responsibility. And somewhere about a year and a half ago, I dropped that albatross.
"I've always been around very funny people and I didn't always feel that I myself had any talent in the humour department.
"But the more people I spend time with - who support and nurture that part of me - the more it's coming out. So I'm very happy."
Morissette lets a few gags rip over the course of her new behind-the-scenes doco, Feast On Scraps - produced and directed by Morissette herself. The DVD also gives fans a healthy helping of their idol's new carefree attitude.
"I think I was ready to show different parts of me that, in the past, I wasn't prepared to show yet," she says. "Certainly I showed those parts to my friends and my intimates but not to everybody else."
There are 20 live tracks on the DVD, but Feast On Scraps also comes with a CD featuring eight more songs from 2002's Under Rug Swept sessions.

Greetings, eh. I'm happy to inform you that our secret plans to take over the United States are going better than we could ever have anticipated.
First, we've quietly persuaded President Bush to send as many troops as he can out of the country by the middle of February in order to deal with something or other about this guy Hussein in Iraq. Perfect!

Second, we've engineered the weather so that the entire US is freezing - even Florida! Ideal conditions for Canadian special ops teams to operate.

Alanis is cited for her dedication to causes making the world safer for young people, including the benefit concert Groundwork, for The Act to Reduce Hunger, as well as several fund-raisers for gun control and 9/11 relief. "I feel honored and blessed to be able to express my humanness, yearnings and revelations through my art," said Alanis, apparently without any irony. "For that to be something that may touch and inspire others, that invites them to define themselves in accordance to me, and that may remind them in some small way of their beauty and the gift that is life is the greatest gift I could possibly imagine. No, I have no idea what that means either, but it sure sounds purdy, don't it?"

It seems that Alanis is going to start a new album during the next spring.. it seems reasonable reading her latest letter published in the paintbox (on alanis.com). Indeed she says:

been waking up in the middle of night with a drive to write which means if i don't start soon i will explode (read:the more i've been holding in the more i've been feeling depressed, which i at first thought was post-holiday anti-climatic stuff--which i've experienced after every tour, every break-up, and every christmas etc--post trauma stress disorder haha)--but i now realize that i feel depressed because i have so much i want to say and get out...that i've been holding all this in and that it's making me sick... so for the love of god write and get it out and save some doctor's bills... the usual fear of success fear of banality fear of having too much to say to even know where to begin...
